Con la popularización de los correos de alta capacidad se ha extendido el uso de los mismos como lugares de intercambio de archivos, al puro estilo de las famosas redes P2P. Este fenómeno ya cuenta con un nombre propio: “Peer2Mail” (P2M).
Al igual que ha sucedido con el ‘clásico’ peer to peer (P2P) la polémica ya ha saltado por el posible uso ilegal que le pueden dar algunos usuarios, al intercambiar archivos cuya difusión indiscriminada no está permitida.
Otra de las similitudes con el P2P es que también se emplea un software para facilitar la tarea. El eMule o Kazaa de este nuevo método de intercambio se llama igual que la modalidad: Peer2Mail, una aplicación cuyo desarrollador Ran Geva, un joven israelí, se inspiró en el servicio de correo de Google (Gmail), pionero de la alta capacidad gratuita.
Su funcionamiento se basa en almacenar archivos en cuentas de correo para que un tercero, que conoce los datos de acceso a la cuenta, pueda entrar y coger los archivos. Ésta es la principal diferencia con el P2P, en el que los usuarios descargar los archivos desde el ordenador de otra persona.
Peer2Mail es una aplicación gratuita que muestra publicidad en su parte superior, pero que no incluye ningún tipo de spyware o adware y cuyo uso se ha extendido muy rápidamente entre los internautas.
La ventaja principal del P2M frente al P2P es su rapidez. Primero, porque con el P2M el usuario no espera colas a la hora de descargar archivos, ni le influyen sistemas de preferencia. Y segundo, porque la velocidad de descarga será equivalente a la conexión que el usuario que quiere el archivo tenga (en el caso de los P2P influye la velocidad que tenga el usuario que ofrece el fichero, por lo que aunque uno tenga ADSL si el otro accede mediante RTB no verá manifestada su alta velocidad).
Por otra parte, un factor diferencial con respecto a otros sistemas de intercambio de archivos es la libertad de acceso a los contenidos compartidos, independientemente de si se está detrás de un firewall o no. eMule, Kazaa y compañía no funcionan desde dentro de muchos entornos corporativos, ya que sus cortafuegos tienen restringido el tráfico a través de los puertos, por los que se comunican estas aplicaciones. El Peer2Mail usa los mismos puertos que una página web, con lo que el acceso es libre.[Via]
